Jataka Tales are Birth Stories, 547 tales that recount some of the Buddha's former lives during his long journey as a Bodhisatta aspiring to Awakening. These are not merely stories, rather these were used by Buddha to inspire many disciples on the path to enlightenment and it is enlightenment which was the foremost goal for the Buddha which he wanted to kindle in many people.
